Shadows and Reflections Week 3

Unit 5 Week 3 Shadows and Reflections

This week we will continue our unit, Shadows and Reflections! During this unit students will explore shadows and reflections using observations, experiments, and books to learn what makes a shadow and a reflection. Through story time books, children hear about a girl playing by a still pond, a puppy who thinks he's a kitten, a crocodile collecting reflections in a pail, a sleepy boy who sees a shadow save a cat, and a raccoon who has an adventure with his own reflection. Children continue to learn about letters, and sounds and counting concrete objects. They will participate in many other mathematics, science, music, poetry and art activities.

Small Groups:
Mathematics- Students will tally the number of animals that appear in familiar stories and practice writing the numerals, as well as practice comparing the number of tally marks.
Science– Students will explore the images of objects when reflected in multiple reflective panels
Literacy and Art- Students will draw a picture of the reflection that they liked best from the story “Puddle Pail”. Students will try to label their pictures with words.
Art- Students will put together a picture of Bear and his shadow to begin our exploration of what causes shadows.
Special Activity - On Thursday morning we will be attending a music program in the high school dance room! :)

Sensory Table- Looking for reflections of floating objects
Easel - Painting pictures of clouds
Table - Play dough
Art table - Creating a collages with reflective paper
Rug – Lincoln Logs
Dramatic Play – Pretending to be customers and workers at the Donut shop
Manipulatives - Making buildings out of wooden blocks to make shadows
