Unit 6 Week 1

Unit 6- Things That Grow

This week, our class will begin our unit on Things That Grow! Children will explore how living things grow, using observations, experiments, and books. Through story time readings, children will hear about ducks who find a special home, a new baby on a farm, a boy who grows from baby to school age, and a girl who discovers the joys of growing vegetables. Children continue to learn about letters, sounds, and rhyming words, and participate in many other math, science, music, poetry, and art activities.

Theme Concepts:
-Living things grow and have life cycles.
-Living things reproduce, and the offspring are the same kind of plant or animal as their parents.
-Living things need food, water, and proper living conditions to survive.
-Immature living things need special care.
-Living things interact, and among animals ther are predators and prey.

Small Groups:
Literacy- Students will continue to look at lowercase letters to identify and match them to each other.
Mathematics- Students will measure objects of varying length to compare how objects that are similar can be different lengths and see that different objects can share properties, like length.
Literacy- Students will play vegetable bingo to help identify different vegetables and things that grow
Science- Students will discuss what things can go into vegetable soup and how those things are grown.
Literacy and Art- Students will draw a picture and tell about their favorite vegetable, using language to describe the appearance of different vegetables.
Art- Students will decorate the letter U for their alphabet books by learning to draw arrows and show the direction 'up'.


Choice Time:
Sensory Table- sorting different seeds and grains
Easel – Painting pictures of where things can grow
Table - Play dough
Manipulatives- building long structures with unifix cubes
Rug – puzzles
Dramatic Play – kitchen area, using foods that can be grown to make soup!
